Superfoods have become insanely popular in the past several years. They are constantly promoted on social media, sold in overpriced juices, and found in every hipster coffee shop as odd elixirs and medicinal drops with unlimited health benefits. I, for one, totally buy into the whole superfood trend and really love that you can naturally get antioxidants, vitamins and immune boosters from the foods that you eat. So, to get you Multi Mag readers on the superfood bandwagon, I’ll be creating an ongoing list of my favorite superfoods at the moment. Here are my top 4 for March:

Native to Tibet and inner Mongolia, these fiery-red, tangy berries have been used for centuries by Chinese herbalists to treat poor circulation and to help boost the immune system. Goji berries are rich in plant-based antioxidants, Zinc, fiber and have high concentrations of Vitamin C & Vitamin A. These complex-carbs have all 8 essential amino acids and a single 4 ounce serving provides nearly 10 percent of your daily value for protein. Dried berries can be sprinkled on top of smoothie bowls, cooked into savory dishes like herb-wine chicken, and added to both juices and smoothies.

A vibrant, warm-yellow powder that comes from the ginger family, turmeric is often used in Indian and Asian cooking for its unique, earthy flavor and coloring. However, over time, tumeric has emerged in the spotlight and has gained popularity for its powerful anti-inflammatory uses as well as its ability to act as an alternative to many over the counter medicines. This golden spice can also help regulate blood sugar levels and has been shown to regulate immune system functionality  with its ability to kill off germs and harmful cells. Throw it into your curry, tea, milk and juices for added health benefits, vibrant, earthy-yellow tones, and mild, rustic flavors.

Apple cider vinegar is made from fresh, crushed apples which are then fermented in wooden barrels, turning them into a versatile health aid. Vinegar is a natural cleansing and healing elixir due to its high probiotic content, ability to alkalinize the body, and capability  to regulate blood sugar levels. It helps to stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is essential for the proper digestion of foods and the protection against ingested pathogens. By improving digestion, it offers relief from acid reflux, and leads to clearer skin and metabolic function. I take a shot of it every morning, mixing a tablespoon of it with a splash of water and a dribble of maple syrup. Like most of the other superfoods it can be added to juices and teas, as well as added to water, salad dressings and to savory dishes for a slight sour kick. POW!

Like chocolate, cacao powder contains flavonoids, which are known to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. With fewer than 15 calories per tablespoon and containing almost no fat, cacao provides a strong chocolate flavor without the guilt. This is unrefined  cacao which still retains all the antioxidants, vitamins and phytochemicals that makes this such a super fruit. Raw cacao powder contains more than 300 different chemical compounds and nearly four times the antioxidant power of your average dark chocolate.Try adding the powder to smoothies for a rich chocolaty taste, or making a hot cacao drink by adding boiling water, coconut sugar and dash of cinnamon and cayenne pepper. A hot yummy drink for a chilly afternoon.
